Sweet Obsession Prose Part 1
The music was just loud enough to grate on Kirb’s nerves, fueling his anxiety. He stuck close to the wall, grasping his plastic cup of beer tightly and avoiding making direct eye contact with anyone at the crowded house party. He didn’t even know whose house it was, he was dragged here by his friend, Kieran, who was only a loose acquaintance of the host himself.
Kirb only left the safety of the wall to refill his drink, and was by now fairly inebriated. He made his way back from the concessions table to the living room and resumed being a wallflower. Among the sea of unfamiliar faces Kieran appeared from a nearby room, and made his way drunkenly towards Kirb.
“Kirbster!” Kieran called to him as he approached. “There you are, how’s it going buddy?”
“How do you think?” Kirb scoffed. “I don’t know anyone here.”
“That’s like, the point.” Kieran responded. “You need to expand your social circle, make some friends! Maybe flirt a little, ya know?”
“Is that why you dragged me to a stranger’s house? So I could like, rebound?”
“It’s been over a month, Kirb, it’s hardly a rebound. Come on, I thought you wanted to meet someone.”
Kirb sighed and took another drink from his cup. “I guess you guys are getting pretty sick of my lonely ass whining, aren’t you?”
“You’ve been miserable since the break up. You never know, you might meet someone,” Kieran downed the remainder of his cup. “Or not, it’s all good just you know, maybe try?”
Kirb sighed again, he knew his drunk friend meant well but it didn’t make him feel any more confident in himself.
“Fine,” he said. “I’ll talk to someone.”
“Awesome, now get out there and mingle!” Kieran pushed Kirb in the direction of the living room and wandered off.
Kirb looked around. “Easy for him to say,” he thought to himself. “Everyone has pretty much already formed their own groups. I don’t really see much in the way of an opening anywhere.”
His eyes scanned the living room and landed on one of the smaller sofas. Sitting alone was a beautiful thin young man with long deep blue hair and dark skin. He had something pink on his head, were those horns? A fashion accessory, Kirb figured. The man was in general pretty stylish looking, at least to Kirb’s drunken eyes.
He glanced at himself in a mirror on the nearby wall. A simple shirt and jeans combo hung on his lean frame, his brown hair its usual unruly mess. Kirb didn’t know the first thing about fashion or style. He felt out of his league here, but the other man was sitting there quietly browsing on his phone, obviously bored. It was the only real opening he saw.
He took an extra large swig of his liquid courage and began to saunter over towards the sofa. He almost lost his nerve and considered turning around, but before he knew it he had sat down next to the other man who didn’t even react to his sudden presence.
A few seconds passed as Kirb’s thoughts went into overdrive trying to think of something, anything, to say to open a conversation. Was he going to flirt? Can he flirt? Oh god you’re drunk don’t you dare flirt.
“Hey, uh, nice…horns?”
The other man looked up from his phone at Kirb, looked around for a moment then back at him.
“Are you…making fun of me?” The man asked, looking a little upset. Something was off about his eyes, Kirb swore they almost seemed to glow behind the lenses of the glasses he was wearing.
“What? Oh, no, no!” Kirb panicked and started to ramble. “No it was a pick up line, I mean, I’m hitting on you, I mean, I’m sorry!’
The man laughed as he put his phone away, the other hand giving a gentle pat on Kirb’s shoulder. His teeth looked oddly…sharp. “I’m sorry, you’re fine, you’re fine. I’m just teasing you.”
Kirb managed a small nervous chuckle as he exhaled in relief. “Sorry, I’m not good at this.”
“It’s really okay, I’m flattered you tried.” The horned man said.
“I really do like your horn…things.” Kirb said, cautiously.
“Thanks, I was born with them.”
“Hah…huh?” Kirb smiled nervously, feeling like he wasn’t quite getting the joke.
A long pink tail appeared from behind the horned man and fluttered about for a moment.
“Matches my tail,” the man said.
Kirb stared blanky for a second, then started to realize something. The other man’s eyes were indeed, actually glowing. Also his ears seemed unnaturally long. Horns, tail…it all clicked together at once.
“Oh…oooh. Y-you’re-!” Kirb stammered loudly, then lowered his voice to nearly a whisper. “You’re…a demon? Like an actual demon?”
Thaun looked at him with a puzzled expression.
“Um…yeah?” He responded. “Wait, did you seriously not realize that?”
“I’m drunk!” Kirb blurted. “I mean, sorry I didn’t know I thought…I thought it was a weird fashion thing. I just-”
“Weird fashion thing?”
“I’m sorry I’m no good.” Kirb said as he stood up unsteadily. The demon grabbed his hand and pulled him back towards the sofa.
“No, don’t go!” He pleaded. “This is the most interesting conversation I’ve had all night.”
Kirb reluctantly sat back down. “Sorry,” he repeated. “I just…I just wanted to hit on you and I didn’t realize…”
“That you were flirting with a demon?”
“Yeah. And badly,” KIrb said flatly.
“Very,” the demon chuckled. “Well, now that you know, did you still want to continue?”
Kirb’s face was already fairly flushed from the alcohol, but somehow he managed to blush even harder. “I wouldn’t mind continuing to badly flirt with you…if you’re cool with it.”
“Fine with me, I’m Thaun by the way,” the demon held out his hand. Kirb reached out and gently shook it in response.
“Kirb. Pleased to meet you.”
“Well Kirb,” Thaun said. “I take it you don’t have a lot of experience flirting with demons?”
Kirb worried he might somehow blush even harder. He downed the remainder of his beer. “No, I’ve never formerally…met one.”
“Seriously?” Thaun sounded genuinely surprised. “I know we’re uncommon around here but…”
“Yeah well, I think I saw one at the mall once. But otherwise not really,” Kirb explained. “I’ve only been living here for around a year and I don’t really get out much. Before then I was raised in a pretty small town. Oh, there was this one angel family there though. But that’s about the extent of my experience.”
“Well I hope I can leave a good impression then,” Thaun took Kirb’s now empty cup. “Shall I get you a refill and maybe we can chat a bit?”
“S-sure!” Kirb didn’t understand how this was going so well, but it was.
After Thaun returned with Kirb’s refill, the two started chatting up a storm. They talked about their jobs, where they lived, what tv shows and Youtube channels they liked. They especially connected over the latter two, discovering they had similar tastes in media. In the blink of an eye a couple hours had passed. Kirb was extremely hammered by this point so it was agreed Thaun should escort him home.
Thaun parked his car nearby Kirb’s apartment and started walking Kirb up to his front door. They were both being pretty friendly with each other at this point, mostly instigated by Kirb’s drunken affection. They had barely made it to the door before the casual flirting turned into full on make outs.
Kirb started it but Thaun escalated it. He pressed Kirb’s body up against the wooden door. Kirb held onto the sides of Thaun’s face as they passionately kissed. Thaun reached his hand under Kirb’s shirt and started lifting it.
“Wait, don’t.” Kirb finally separated his mouth from Thaun’s long enough to get words out.
Thaun swiftly pulled back away from Kirb. “I’m sorry I just thought…”
“Oh no, you did nothing wrong…” Kirb said, rubbing the back of his head nervously and looking down. “I just…”
“Just what?”
Kirb sighed. “I got carried away because I was, am, super drunk. I wasn’t really looking for a random hook up.”
“Oh…” Thaun sounded more than a little disappointed.
“It’s not that I am not interested!” Kirb blurted out. “I am, like, really interested. I just…I dunno, I don’t really do the one night stand thing. I’m more interested…well…”
Thaun patiently waited for him to finish. Kirb had a very hard time maintaining eye contact.
“I…I’m kind of more interested in, like, a relationship….I guess.”
“I…see.” Thaun placed his hand on chin, he looked like he was giving what Kirb said some serious thought. After a few moments he looked back at Kirb and smiled. “What if I were to ask you out on a date then? Like, a proper one with a movie, dinner, the whole shebang?”
“R-really?” Kirb asked, his face was so red by this point, he hoped it was too dark to notice.
“I mean, unless you’re not cool with the whole…” Thaun awkwardly gestured to himself. “You know, dating a demon thing. I mean it can be a lot so I totally understand if you don’t-”
“No, it’s very cool! I mean fine! It’s fine!” Kirb grabbed Thaun’s hand. “I really enjoyed tonight, I wasn’t expecting to but I did.”
Thaun smiled in relief. “I did too.”
The two shared another, more modest kiss before exchanging phone numbers and wishing each other a good night.
Thaun returned to his car and gave Kirb a quick wave before driving off. Kirb waved back enthusiastically until the car was far in the distance. He fumbled for his keys a bit and then entered his apartment. Immediately after locking the door behind him he fist bumped the air in celebration.
“Yes!” he exclaimed.
Kirb threw himself down on the living room couch.
“I can’t believe I got a date! With a hot demon no less! Oh man, I’m so out of my depth, I hope I don’t screw this up…”
Kirb’s stomach let out a loud gurgling sound.
“Man, for some reason I am starving,” Kirb mumbled to himself, rubbing his grumbling tummy. He picked himself up and headed into the kitchen area. He opened a few cupboards and stared into the fridge for a bit, trying to find something quick he could grab.
“A sandwich would be pretty easy but not sure if that is going to be enough…I’ll have to do some cooking.” He decided. “Now what to make…”
Kirb’s stomach cried out again.
“Okay, okay I’m making something!”
Kirb started a small montage of food prep. He poured a box of spaghetti into some boiling water and heated up some sauce and meatballs. While that was going he cut open a big loaf of bread he took home from the bakery where he worked and built an extra large sandwich with everything he could find in the fridge. He had a roll of cookie dough he hadn’t used up yet, and figured a bit of dessert wouldn’t hurt.
After everything was finished he carried his extra large portion of spaghetti and meatballs, giant sandwich, freshly baked cookies and a 2-liter of soda to the living room coffee table. He assumed he’d have leftovers, but as he started to chow down that became obviously less and less likely.
He almost couldn’t eat fast enough, he scooped up large forkfulls of meat and noodles into his mouth one after another until the plate was completely empty. Without evening pausing he grabbed the large sandwich and consumed it in record time. Next he went for the heaping pile of cookies and quickly did away with most of them.
The cookies made him very thirsty so he reached for the soda bottle, ignored the cup he brought over and went straight to chugging it with gusto. He downed over half of it in one sitting and let out a large satisfying burp.
He was so focused on consuming he hadn’t even noticed how tight his jeans were feeling until now.
“Oof…” he rubbed the top of his small protruding belly. “I think I overdid it.”
He reached down to the straining button on his pants and released it, his small belly expanded a bit more in relief.
“Yeah, I definitely ate too much. I’m all bloated now,” he grumbled, and grabbed another cookie from the plate. “I should really clean up and get to bed…” he said as he took a bite, then looked down at the other half of the cookie in his hand.
“What am I doing?” He scolded himself. “I’m freaking stuffed and I am still eating?” He placed the half eaten cookie back down, only a couple intact cookies even remained. He rubbed his belly a bit more, “Uug, it hurts now. Why did I eat so much, and so late too…”
Slowly and awkwardly he lifted himself up from the sofa with a long grunt.
“Welp, bed time. I need to digest all this in time for tomorrow. Or I guess later today at this point.” Kirb stretched a bit and cradled his bloated stomach. “I wouldn’t want to show up with a big belly on our first date, I want him to like me after all.”
Kirb made his way to the bedroom, kicked off his shoes and pants and collapsed into the bed. Thaun stayed on his mind until he finally drifted to sleep.
